The RCF police, who are investigating the alleged abduction and rape of a 21-year-old woman by three persons in an autorickshaw on September 26, have zeroed in on six autorickshaw drivers plying in the Chembur-Chunabhatti stretch who have not been found at their residential addresses.

The RCF police have been looking out for an auto driver and his two accomplices, who allegedly abducted the victim — who is suffering from major depressive disorder (MDD) mental condition — from outside her mother’s Vashi Naka residence around 2.30am. The accused forced her into an autorickshaw, raped her and dumped her while she was unconscious in Chunabhatti. She was later found wandering around by beat marshals on night duty and taken to Sion hospital.

“Since one of the accused was identified as an autorickshaw driver, we began searching out for drivers who matched the description of the accused given by the victim,” said an officer from RCF police who did not wish to be named.

“We have narrowed down our search to six autorickshaw drivers. We have not been able to track them to their residence. We suspect the accused belongs to this group,” added the officer.

The police had released the sketches of the three accused based on the description given by the victim last week.

A 26-year-old school teacher caught an armed chain snatcher with the help of locals and two police constables, on Monday. The incident took place around 10.15 pm when Sangeeta Thorat, a schoolteacher, was returning to her residence at Vashi Naka, from a grocery store. She was attacked by Romeo Skaria, 22, and an unidentified accomplice, while passing the Tembi bridge in Chembur.
Skaria and his accomplice were on foot and accosted Thorat, threatening her to hand over her gold chain, weighing 10 gm. Thorat sustained minor injuries on the neck.

In her complaint to the Chembur police, Thorat said, “When I tried to push Skaria, he pulled the gold chain from my neck and held a chopper to my neck. The locals, hearing my shouts for help, attacked Skaria.”

A woman riding pillion on a motorcycle was killed after she was crushed by a heavy vehicle at Gavanpada, Vashi Naka, in Chembur. The incident occurred on Tuesday around 7 pm when Alpana Shelke (28) was returning home after tying rakhi on her brother Vidhu Patil, who resides at JJ Wadi in Chembur, the police said.

The driver of the heavy vehicle, Jeev Kadam (30), was nabbed from the spot and has been booked for rash and negligent driving, the police said.

In another accident, a 45-year-old woman riding pillion on a motorcycle was killed after she fell down and was crushed below the front tyre of a dumper. The mishap occurred on Monday on LBS Marg in Kurla (W) around 10.30 pm when the victim, Shamin Khan, was riding pillion with her son Habibulla (20), said the police.

A senior inspector said that the driver, Rahim Shaikh, fled from the spot in fear of getting thrashed by the mob. The next morning, Shaikh surrendered himself before the cops.

The woes of Mumbai resurfaced as monsoon hit the coastal city Mumbai. As the city has been witnessing heavy rains since Tuesday, most parts of it went under swathes of water.

Heavy downpour led to a wall collapse in Thane claiming eight lives. Rains also triggered a landslide at the Chembur-Vashi-Naka area. However, no casualty was reported.

The downpour resulted in water-logging in several parts of the city. People waded through knee-deep water. As in the past, the storm water drainage system collapsed again.

Large parts of the city were flooded and residents were marooned in their houses. Normal life was hit in areas around Andheri and Hindmata due to heavy water-logging.

A 24-year-old boxer from Akola - who was jobless despite reaching the state level in the sport – hanged herself at her father’s home at HPCL Colony at Vashinaka, Chembur on Friday evening.

Priyanka Belkade, the third of four daughters, moved from Akola to Mumbai in November last year and had been suffering from depression since then, family members told the police.

The family lived in Akola, while Priyanka’s father Digamber worked in Mumbai. Priyanka and her younger sister Komal had come to the city in search of better prospects.

According to the RCF police, Digamber, a former defence man, had gone to Akola to meet his wife and son when the incident occurred. He came to know about the suicide from his elder daughter Rita Tayade, who had been asked to stay with Priyanka in his absence.

Around 5.30 pm on Friday, Rita had taken her child to a garden in the  locality. When they returned an hour later, Rita found the door to the flat ajar.

In her statement, she said, “Rushing into the house, I saw my sister hanging from the ceiling. Immediately, I took the help of the neighbours to rush her to Inlaks hospital. Later, she was shifted to Rajawadi hospital, where she was declared dead before admission.”

“The girl’s father, who returned to Mumbai on Saturday, said she had been depressed since November. The depression could be because she could not make it big in her professional career,” said Shirish Shelke, senior inspector of RCF Police Station.

Sources said that Priyanka quit training sessions at her club in Akola and moved to Mumbai due to family problems.

Her younger sister Komal had won medals at state and national level boxing championships, but Priyanka was not so lucky.

“She was a talented sportsperson. She had won the state level boxing championship, but missed the national title narrowly in 2008. Her sister Komal is also a professional boxer and has excelled both at state and national levels,” said Suchita Dhamale, public relations and media officer of the Maharashtra Amateur Boxing Association

A 14-year old girl was raped and her body dumped in a Mhada Colony at Vashinaka in Chembur on Saturday. The police suspect the involvement of a few boys from the same building or locality.

According to the police, the victim stepped out of her house around 10 am on Friday to buy shampoo from a nearby grocery store. “When she did not return for 45 minutes, her brother got worried and informed their mother, who rushed back home from work and began searching for her daughter,” said assistant commissioner of police Jalinder Kandagle. “Around 4 pm, the family filed a missing complaint with the RCF police station.”

On Saturday, the girl’s family found a gunny bag dumped inside a vacant flat on the ground floor of their building. They opened the bag and found the girl’s body. The victim’s mouth was covered with a piece of cloth and her hands were tied. The police found strangulation marks on her neck and blood stains on her private parts, indicating that she was raped. The body has been sent for a post-mortem.

The body of a 14-year-old girl, who went missing from her Chembur home on Friday morning, was found early on Saturday, stuffed in a gunny bag in a ground floor apartment of the same building she lived in. The victim, Sonali Vasant Bellur, had been murdered, allegedly by unidentified persons. The teenager’s mouth had been gagged with a handkerchief, and her hands were tied behind her back.

Sonali lived with her parents in a fourth floor flat in Pancharatna building (No 12) in MHADA Colony, Vashi Naka, in Chembur. She left her home at around 10am on Friday to buy a shampoo sachet, but never returned. After searching the area, her mother Laxmi, a domestic help, lodged a missing persons complaint the same evening with the RCF Police. Laxmi also informed her brother Arjun Guru, a resident of Ambernath, that Sonali had gone missing and he rushed to Chembur.

Last month a teenager from Delhi was arrested by RCF police  for possesing a  country-made revolver and a live cartridge,  near Bhojwani Park at Cheetah Camp in Chembur (Delhi teen held with revolver in Chembur)  

Now a few days later ,  two more Delhi teenagers was arrested  by RCF police  under the arms act .
The two persons from picked up from Islampura of Vasi Naka area in Chembur for possessing a country made revolver loaded with two live cartridges .

The RCF police on Friday arrested Majid Khan at Vashi Naka in Chembur. The a 21-year-old man was booked for possessing 35 fake 500 Rupee currency notes. The appregended confessed to have bought the notes for Rs 5000 from Jalna and Aurangabad. He also said that he was to hand them over to a party.

Assistant Police Inspector Rajesh Kewale of the RCF police station said “Khan claimed that he works as a waiter and had come to stay in Indira Nagar a month ago. The currencies look very authentic. If he had put them to use, he would have been able to spend Rs 17,500,”
