Deonar police recently caught the most wanted auto thief Mohammad Ajmeri (30) who is a Mumbra resident while driving a stolen auto (MH-03-AK-1670) in Govandi. The auto belonged to complainant Mohammad Samshuddin (40), a resident of Baingawadi.
The Deonar police said that few days ago the complainant Shamshuddin had parked his auto in front of Kena Market. Within minutes Ajmeri, the accused managed to flee with the auto. The aggrieved Shamshuddin then lodged a complaint in Deonar police station.
While patrolling the streets from Tata Nagar to Govandi Railway station, three Deonar police constables Raju Padalkar, Thakur and Jagtap spotted the auto. The accused was plying the auto on share basis which had six passengers.
When confronted Ajmeri blurted out that the vehicle belonged to his boss and he is plying the auto on rent. Not convinced by his answers the constables took Ajmeri to Deonar police station. When the owner Samshuddin arrived at the police station, he revealed about the auto theft.
The modus operandi of Ajmeri is very daring. After fleeing with the auto he plies the auto in the same locality on seat sharing basis for two to three days and earns approximately around

Rs.400 per day. Then he parks the vehicle in the parking lot for a month or so by paying parking charges. Once the situation becomes normal he sells the auto by dismantling it in Kurla spare part market.

“Ajmeri had been booked under section 379 of IPC. He will be in police custody for five days. We are further investigating whether he has stolen anymore vehicles and if there are any partners in crime,” said Crime police inspector Pandit Thakre of Deonar police station.
“The money so earned by fraudulent means, the accused Ajmeri splurges on movies, good clothes, food, electronic gadgets and do drugs also.

Our alert constables managed to catch hold of him in time and handed over the auto to its owner who was plying the vehicle day and night to earn some extra bucks for his daughter’s impending marriage,” Thakre further revealed.

The Chembur police arrested a driver Santosh Singh (28) for stealing silver utensils worth Rs 11.2 lakh from his employer Aarti Malhotra’s house in Chembur on September 16.

Accused thought his employer would not suspect him as he was a trusted worker. The accused has been remanded in custody till Wednesday.

Police arrested Singh’s two accomplices- Avinash Raut (29) and Parvesh Singh (28)- both drivers, for helping him hide the utensils. Police also recovered the utensils.

On September 12, Malhotra who is employed in a city-based company asked Singh to stay home to take care of her father till she comes back from her business tour. Malhotra, in her complaint said, “I did not suspect Singh who received me at the airport on September 16. I learnt about the missing bag on September 25.”

Chembur police arrested three youths for stealing silver ornaments amounting to rupees 11,20,000.00 from the residence of a 52 year old woman in Chembur on September 25. The valuables have been recovered from the accused.

The police arrested 28 year olds Santosh Brijnandan Singh and Pravesh Awadhesh Singh on Septermber 28 and third accomplice 29 year old Avinash Rama Raut was arrested on Septermber 30.

The police said that the main accused Santosh Singh was working as a driver for Aarti Malhotra for the past three and half years and gained good confidence of her. A resident of Chembur, Malhotra is employed in a company. She was living with her 81 year old father in her service residence.

Owing to her office tour she had gone out of Mumbai for few days. While going on tour she entrusted the job of caretaking her elderly father to her trusted driver Santosh Singh. But he had other plans. During this period he made away with a bag containing silver utensils from Malhotra’s residence before her arrival.
Bhimrao Rathod, the senior police inspector of Chembur police station said, “We zeroed on Santosh as the main suspect. After thorough interrogation he spilled the beans and revealed his modus operandi and the names of his co-conspirators”.
“He confessed that in the night of September 16, when he was going the airport to pick up his employer Malhotra, he stole the bag containing silver ornaments from her house and handed it over to his accomplices Avinash and Parvesh on the way” revealed Rathod, the senior police inspector.
The accused have been arrested under section 381 and 34 IPC and they will be produced in court tomorrow said a police officer.

With the increase in number of cases where Mumbaikars are robbed by men posing as policemen, the East Region police have intensified action and also found that in some cases, it is their own men who at the culprits.

“In a few cases, we have identified some suspects and they are policemen. In one such case at Ghatkopar, we arekeeping a close watch on a constable, who is on sick leave. In another case registered with the Tilak Nagar police, we are probing into the involvement of a suspended constable,” said Quaiser Khalid, additional commissioner of police, East Region.

The police have also identified areas — mostly isolated stretches — where such incidents take place and have posted officers in plainclothes there.

Khalid added that increased awareness among the public will help prevent such crimes.

In a recent case, two men on a motorcycle approached an 80-year-old woman near Sainik Garden in Chembur.

The duo told her that some men had attacked a woman and robbed her valuables a short distance away and advised her to remove her ornaments, place them in her handkerchief and go home. While “helping her”, they stole the jewellery worth Rs66,000 and snuck in pieces of paper.

A newly-appointed domestic help drugged a 61-year-old woman and her two other helps, and stole diamond-studded gold ornaments and cash, totally worth Rs 56.5 lakh, at a Chembur Colony bungalow on Sunday midnight.

The police said Ramesh Kumar (aged around 35), who hails from Nepal, was appointed late on September 16 and two days later drugged Seeta Thakur (name changed), the wife of a transport businessman, and the other helps. On Monday, when Thakur woke up to pray, she found Chandrika and Shiva unconscious on the terrace but there was no trace of Kumar.

“Kumar had added sedatives to the dinner. He stole diamond-studded bangles, rings, a pendant, some idols and cash, and fled without harming anyone,” said additional commissioner of police (east region) Quaiser Khalid.

Chembur police are on the lookout for the unidentified accused who stole cash and five gold biscuits worth Rs 59 lakh from a locker of a bank at Maitri Park in Chembur. The matter came to light when Swarnsingh Wasan, 47, a Chembur-based doctor to whom the locker belonged, visited the bank to check status of the valuables and found them missing.

The complainant claimed in his complaint that the thieves took around Rs 22 lakh in cash and gold biscuits costing Rs37 lakh. Wasan alleged that he could not find the keys to his bank locker between June 16 and June 22 and upon discovering them, he decided to check valuables kept in the locker, said the police.

“I discovered that the valuables were missing and immediately informed the bank officials who had no idea about the theft,” said Wasan in his complaint.

The zonal deputy commissioner of police Sanjay Shintre formed a team of senior inspector Bhimdev Rathod of Chembur police station and two other officials to trace the culprit. Investigations are also on the trace how the unidentified accused managed to access the locker since it cannot be accessed without the knowledge of the bank.

“We approached the bank and are going through the footage, recorded between June 16 and June 21, in the camera installed in the locker room. It will help in identifying the thief,” said Shintre.

The Trombay police detained two brothers who reportedly duped five employees of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Trombay, of Rs 1.22 crore.

Vivek Rohila (35) and his brother, Vinod, reportedly offered the victims flats in Deonar at rates less than the market price. The victims lodged a complaint on Tuesday night when the accused stopped responding to their calls.

The brothers, who live in Nerul, are known to their victims. While Anil Pradhan (50) was duped of Rs 49 lakh, Nagraj Adanki (33) lost Rs 20 lakh. Newton Mithaliyan (59) was conned of Rs 28 lakh, G Badrinarayana (52) of Rs 10 lakh and Vinay Verma (36) of Rs 15 lakh.

The property cell of Mumbai police on Thursday foiled a robbery bid in Kurla and arrested six members of a gang. The cops also recovered two guns, three choppers and a Hyundai vehicle from them.

The accused have been identified as Sudhiraja Devraj Nadar, Swami Nadar Pujar, Sandeep Sakharam Pawar, Harish Shekar Jadhav, Babu Vasant Gujral and Shaikh Abdul Bari. Gujral had earlier shot at a woman constable of the Chembur police and fled.

Sources say over 2,000 illegal lines have been supplied to the hutments in the area

Local goon allegedly supplies power and water to areas including police station; residents allege nexus between BMC and cops in flourishing scam.

In a strange case of law bending, the upholders themselves seem to be violating many laws for personal benefit.

During an investigation by MiD DAY in Govandi, it was discovered that the Shivaji Nagar police station is illegally using electricity provided by Gotya, a small-time goon from Baiganwadi residing in the area.

Further inquiries indicated that areas in and around the police station are also availing of unauthorised power supply from Gotya, who operates as a private supplier.

In fact, electricity is not the only illegal connection that the police station is using. The water supply is also unauthorised.
