Mumbai, Jul 3 (UNI) In a major breakthrough in investigations into the murder of senior journalist J Dey, the crime branch of Mumbai police has arrested a local builder Vinod Chembur, who allegedly financed the killing of Dey. Vinod Asrani alias Chembur was produced before a Magistrate this morning and remanded to police custody till July 7.

Crime branch sources said intensive grilling of sharpshooter Kaliya and Underworld don Chhota Rajan’s key aide D K Rao, who was picked up for questioning yesterday, revealed the involvement of Vinod Chembur.

Vinod, who is allegedly involved in laundering Rajan’s tainted funds in real estate and was once a leading cricket bookie, had handed over money on Rajan’s behalf to Subhash Kaliya, who shot dead Dey on June 11 in Powai.

Kaliya, an ace sharpshooter of Rajan gang, was allegedly paid Rs 5 lakh for the killing in two instaLments of Rs two and three lakhs by Vinod’s men, sources said.

Kaliya, along with six others, had been arrested in connection with the murder of Dey.

Rao, who had gone underground for several days after the killing, resurfaced yesterday and was detained by police. though police officials were tight-lipped, sources said they grilled the aide to ascertain if he had any prior knowledge of Dey’s murder or not.

On friday, a person claiming to be Rajan, called up a private chaanel and claimed he got Dey killed as he had crossed his limits.

Rao was acquitted in two cases, a year ago, and had one case pending against him, involving killing of gangster O P Singh inside Nashik jail in 2003.

Sources said after intensive grilling of Kaliya, police were on the lookout for the builder and some of key aides of Rajan in Tilak nagar to establish the motive and conspiracy behind the killing.

The Chembur police has made the sketch of the suspect in the murder of a 35-year-old woman found dead at a lodge in Chembur on Sunday. The employees of Bharat lodge who were present when the deceased Noorjahan Shaikh, 35, checked in along with an unidentified man on Saturday night, are helping the police with the same.

Police sub inspector N Ghughe from Chembur said, “The victim was strangulated by a saree that was found wrapped around her neck. The staff at the lodge did not notice when the person accompanying the deceased left. He is the prime suspect.” HTC

A 30-year-old man allegedly murdered his ex-wife outside Govandi railway station on Monday evening. The police said the accused suspected the victim of having an affair with another man, because of which he stabbed her to death. An officer from the Deonar police station talking on condition of anonymity as he is not authorised to talk to the media said, “The incident took place on Monday evening, when Julekha Khatun, 25, had come to meet her two children. The children were staying with her estranged husband Salim Akbar Ali Shaikh, 30, at Deonar.”

“As she was going back home, the couple had an argument over an affair Shaikh suspected Khatun of having. Khatun left their house after a heated argument. The accused then followed her till outside the railway station where he stabbed her.”

PTI : A woman was found dead at a lodge in Chembur on Sunday morning. Noorjahan Shaikh, 35, had checked into the Bharat lodge, next to Chembur station, on Saturday night with an unidentified man. According to the employees of the lodge, the duo was not carrying any luggage and was supposed to leave on Sunday. The incident came to light around 5.30 am when one of the employees at the lodge found the door of the room ajar.

Suspecting something amiss, the employee knocked at the door. However, when there was no response after knocking a couple of times, he went inside to room. He found Shaikh lying on the bed, with a saree wrapped around her neck. The man who had accompanied her was missing. Police said he is the prime suspect in the murder.

N Ghughe, sub-inspector, Chembur police station, said the victim had been strangulated by the saree that was found wrapped around her neck. The staff at the lodge did not notice when the person accompanying the deceased left. “The identity details given by the suspect while checking into the hotel were also incorrect,” he added.

The staff told the police that it was the first time the duo had visited the lodge. “We do not think they are from Chembur,” PSI Ghuge added.

The police are on a lookout for five men who allegedly killed a 28-year-old over a previous enmity late on Sunday. Sunil Shankar Jadhav, a contractor by profession, was walking through the Ambedkar playground in Govandi, when he was stabbed by the accused. “Jadhav was brutally slashed by a sword on his head and back,” said D Jodgujari, senior police inspector of Shivaji Nagar police station.
The accused, two identified as Ramesh Naidu and Sanjay Jadhav, who are daily wage labourers, had a fight with the victim over money. The identities of three other accused are not known, the police said.

The five wanted to take revenge from Jadhav. “They had planned the attack and when the got a chance they killed him,” added Jodgujari.

When Jadhav raised an alarm the accused fled. However, when Jadhav’s elder brother heard the scream, he rushed to the spot and rushed him to Sion hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

A 22-year-old man allegedly killed his father in Chembur, on Sunday, for refusing to give money to buy liquor. Shyam Waghmare, who is absconding, allegedly hit his 50-year-old father Ramesh Waghmare on the head with a stone used to cover a drain, after the latter refused to give him Rs 50 to purchase liquor. The police said Shyam had earlier attacked his father, on Saturday, for the same reason.

Senior Police Inspector of Chembur police station Bhimrao Rathod said, “Shyam approached Ramesh again on Sunday, and when the latter refused to give him money again, Shyam hit with him again on the injury he sustained the previous day. Ramesh succumbed to the injuries.”

An officer from the Chembur police station said, “ In his statement, Sagar said Ramesh was an alcoholic and unemployed. He would have frequent fights with his family members, as he was not earning money himself, but would constantly pester his family for the same.”

Sagar, added that they did not approach the police on Saturday when Shyam first attacked Ramesh, thinking he was under the influence of alcohol and hence not in his senses.A case of murder has been registered against Shyam.

A 32-year-old man was arrested on Thursday night for allegedly murdering a man outside a bar in the Mankhurd area. Premsingh Rathod is unemployed and is from the Maharashtra Nagar in Mankhurd. He had an argument with Kanhayilal Gupta (28) over a trivial issue outside Sheetal bar on Sion Panvel road around 6 pm on Thursday.

A police officer from Mankhurd said: “Rathod was drunk and had a fight with Gupta over a petty issue. The argument turned ugly when Rathod started beating up Gupta.” Gupta was rushed to the Shatabdi Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.  Rathod was booked under Section 302 (murder) and arrested him.

An alert patrol team of Mankhurd police station arrested a resident of Lallubhai Compound as he was fleeing after murdering his neighbour on Thursday night.

The accused, Dhanraj Laxman Das (21), lives on the fifth floor of Shree Sai Society. According to the police, around 11:45 pm on Thursday, the victim Yusuf Hakim Shaikh (20), was shouting at his brother, who was standing at the window of their fourth floor residence. Shaikh was standing in the building compound with his mother.

An officer from Mankhurd police station said, “Das, who had had an argument with Shaikh the day before, was standing at the window of his apartment. He thought that Shaikh was yelling at him and ran down with a knife. Das stabbed Shaikh in front of his mother and fled,” the officer said.

A trustee of ‘Aaisha Education’ was stabbed to death by a youth over property dispute at Govandi in north-east Mumbai today.

Police said the deceased Aslam Ibrahim Hasan (40), was running an educational trust just adjoining accused 27-year-old Almaj Geel’s room at Shivaji Nagar in Govandi. Hasan allegedly wanted to take his room for his trust and he used to threaten Almaj and his mother.

At around 1300 hours, when the accused went back home he saw his mother crying. She told him Hasan had approached her and threatened to kill her son if he saw him in the area.In anger, Ajmal stabbed Aslam. after the incident, he went to the police station and surrendered himself. Injured Aslam was rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead on admission.Police have registered a case of murder and further investigations are in progress, sources added.

The brother-in-law of a Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) corporator has been arrested for allegedly trying to eliminate the latter’s former driver in suburban Chembur, police said.

The accused identified as Ram Sonawane was arrested late last night and was remanded to police custody till March 30, police said.

The police have also charged the corporator Parmeshwar Kadam, representing Ghatkopar area, with attempt to murder as the victim Sachin Gaikwad alleged that the accused tried to kill him at behest of Kadam, who flatly denied the charge and sought detailed inquiry into the matter.

According to police, victim Gaikwad and accused Sonawane had a scuffle following heated argument near a beer bar last night when a police patrolling team nabbed the duo.

“Sonawane was wielding a revolver. We seized the revolver and four bullets. Based on the complaint given by victim, we arrested Sonawane on charges of attempt to murder,” said R Gavit, Senior Inspector at Tilak Nagar police station.

As the victim alleged that Sonawane was sent by Kadam, they named the MNS corporator as wanted accused, said Gavit.

Senior Inspector Gavit said, “Sonawane told us that Gaikwad was maligning the image of Kadam and his family. That’s why he wanted to teach Gaikwad a lesson and went with the revolver.”
