As reported by PTI on Sunday, March 28, 2010,
The brother-in-law of a Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) corporator has been arrested for allegedly trying to eliminate the latter’s former driver in suburban Chembur, police said.

The accused identified as Ram Sonawane was arrested late last night and was remanded to police custody till March 30, police said.

The police have also charged the corporator Parmeshwar Kadam, representing Ghatkopar area, with attempt to murder as the victim Sachin Gaikwad alleged that the accused tried to kill him at behest of Kadam, who flatly denied the charge and sought detailed inquiry into the matter.

According to police, victim Gaikwad and accused Sonawane had a scuffle following heated argument near a beer bar last night when a police patrolling team nabbed the duo.

“Sonawane was wielding a revolver. We seized the revolver and four bullets. Based on the complaint given by victim, we arrested Sonawane on charges of attempt to murder,” said R Gavit, Senior Inspector at Tilak Nagar police station.

As the victim alleged that Sonawane was sent by Kadam, they named the MNS corporator as wanted accused, said Gavit.

Senior Inspector Gavit said, “Sonawane told us that Gaikwad was maligning the image of Kadam and his family. That’s why he wanted to teach Gaikwad a lesson and went with the revolver.”

The police have reasons to believe that the Chembur Dentist’s murder was planned as the killer struck at a time when the dentist used to be alone in her clinic.
Dr. Netra Talathi’s  earlier used to stay in Navi Mumbai and had shifted to Chembur after marriage. Though the police said there was no discord in Talathi’s marriage, they are not ruling out a `love triangle’.
“We are also investigating the love triangle theory as it is possible that someone was attracted to her but we do not want to divulge any details,” said The Navi Mumbai commissioner of police Ramrao Wagh .

Chembur resident, Netra Talati (35), a dentist, was found dead with head injuries in her clinic in Navi Mumbai on Thursday. Police are on the lookout for the man who assists her in the clinic at Koparkhairane. Netra, mother of a nine-year-old girl, was married to Wilfred Maskaran, who works in the marketing department of a private firm. Her body was found around 6 pm in her clinic in Channel Tower, Koparkhairane

Netra used to live in Koparkhairane before her marriage and had been practising at the clinic for around 10 years. There are two other establishments on same floor, Karad Cooperative credit society and a pathology lab, both of which were closed on Thursday.

Netra’s clinic timings were 10.30 am to 12.30 pm and 6.30 pm to 9 pm. “Netra would punctually reach her home in Chembur to pick up her daughter who arrived home at 4.30 pm. Today, when she did not turn up, her neighbours called her on her mobile phone and the clinic landline number,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police R. D. Shinde.

“When they did not get any response, they contacted her aunt Vandana Talati who lives near the clinic and asked her to check.” Added Shinde, “When the aunt came to the clinic, she found Netra dead. She then informed us.” The police said Netra’s husband, who was in Hyderabad for some work, has told them that he had spoken to her at 1 pm last and she seemed fine.

“Netra’s father has come from Pune and her husband too is rushing back. We will be talking to them and other relatives to get more details on her and get clues on the motive for the killing,” said Shinde.

“We are trying to trace the assistant of the clinic, who is not answering his cellphone. We could get some vital information from him. We need to check if he was on leave today.” The police said they would check Netra’s phone details to get more information in the case.

Initial investigations did not reveal anything missing from the clinic. The murder weapon has not been found.
