The Chembur police arrested a driver Santosh Singh (28) for stealing silver utensils worth Rs 11.2 lakh from his employer Aarti Malhotra’s house in Chembur on September 16.

Accused thought his employer would not suspect him as he was a trusted worker. The accused has been remanded in custody till Wednesday.

Police arrested Singh’s two accomplices- Avinash Raut (29) and Parvesh Singh (28)- both drivers, for helping him hide the utensils. Police also recovered the utensils.

On September 12, Malhotra who is employed in a city-based company asked Singh to stay home to take care of her father till she comes back from her business tour. Malhotra, in her complaint said, “I did not suspect Singh who received me at the airport on September 16. I learnt about the missing bag on September 25.”

Chembur police arrested three youths for stealing silver ornaments amounting to rupees 11,20,000.00 from the residence of a 52 year old woman in Chembur on September 25. The valuables have been recovered from the accused.

The police arrested 28 year olds Santosh Brijnandan Singh and Pravesh Awadhesh Singh on Septermber 28 and third accomplice 29 year old Avinash Rama Raut was arrested on Septermber 30.

The police said that the main accused Santosh Singh was working as a driver for Aarti Malhotra for the past three and half years and gained good confidence of her. A resident of Chembur, Malhotra is employed in a company. She was living with her 81 year old father in her service residence.

Owing to her office tour she had gone out of Mumbai for few days. While going on tour she entrusted the job of caretaking her elderly father to her trusted driver Santosh Singh. But he had other plans. During this period he made away with a bag containing silver utensils from Malhotra’s residence before her arrival.
Bhimrao Rathod, the senior police inspector of Chembur police station said, “We zeroed on Santosh as the main suspect. After thorough interrogation he spilled the beans and revealed his modus operandi and the names of his co-conspirators”.
“He confessed that in the night of September 16, when he was going the airport to pick up his employer Malhotra, he stole the bag containing silver ornaments from her house and handed it over to his accomplices Avinash and Parvesh on the way” revealed Rathod, the senior police inspector.
The accused have been arrested under section 381 and 34 IPC and they will be produced in court tomorrow said a police officer.

The Mankhurd police have found a decomposed body of a person in a creek behind Tata Power House near Sion-Panvel Highway on September 22. The deceased was in his late thirties and the body was beyond recognition.

Shakir Patel, police sub-inspector of Mankhurd police said, “The deceased was wearing a yellow check shirt with full sleeve and grey jeans. He was of a medium built having a height of 5’6” with wheatish complexion. His entire body was swollen and face was unrecognizable, but did not bore any injury mark”.

After receiving information from control room, the Mankhurd police lead by senior inspector S. Rajput rushed to the spot. The body was recovered from the creek with the help of fire brigade. “After completing spot panchanama and inquest panchanama (procedure to find injury mark if any), the body was sent to Rajawadi hospital for post mortem. The victims information is forwarded to all the nearby police stations,” said Assistant Police Inspector Haridas Kumbhar, the detection officer of the case.

Kumbhar further said, “Hospital authorities have sent viscera of the dead body to forensic laboratory in Kalina for chemical analysis. The actual cause of the death will be known only after forensic report. Anyone known to the deceased should contact Mankhurd police station.”

In a similar incident three years back, a dead body of a woman was found in the creek near Mumbai Vashi Highway. The case was registered in Shivaji Nagar police but till now the identity of the woman could not be ascertained by the police.

Recently (six months ago), a dead body of a man came floating in the same creek. Mankhurd and Vashi police officials had tough time in dealing with the case regarding jurisdiction of the case then.

Sources say that criminals from outside Mumbai, after robbing victims murder them and dump the body in this creek. This highway leads to Express Way on the northern side. In such incidents, most of the time victims do not belong to Mumbai suburbs. Hence police find it difficult to detect identity of the victims.

The abduction and rape of a mentally unstable 21-year-old woman in the wee hours on Monday has put another dent in Mumbai’s image as a women-safe city.

According to the police, the woman was picked up from near a road in Chembur and dumped in the Chunabhatti area around an hour ater.
She was found wandering around by beat marshals on night duty and taken to Sion hospital. A case of rape and abduction was registered against the unidentified men after medical reports confirmed rape.

Additional commissioner of police (east region) Qaiser Khalid said, “We are on the lookout for three persons, including the driver of the auto-rickshaw in which the victim was abducted and raped.” He added that based on whatever the traumatised victim could recollect, officers of the RCF police station in Chembur, where a formal complaint has been registered, have prepared sketches of the accused.

RCF police are on the lookout for three persons, accused of raping a 22-year-old for two hours after abducting her from RCF area in Chembur

A 22-year-old woman was abducted by three Chunabhatti residents and raped in a moving auto rickshaw for two hours last Sunday evening.

The woman, Anita (name changed), was abducted near Rashtriya Chemical and Fertilizers (RCF) company in Chembur and dumped at a spot four km away in Chunabhatti later in the night, where policemen from a beat chowkie found her.

She was rushed to Sion hospital, where she is currently admitted in a ward.

According to the RCF police, they received a call from the Chunabhatti chowkie, informing them that they had brought a rape victim from RCF area to Sion hospital.

With the increase in number of cases where Mumbaikars are robbed by men posing as policemen, the East Region police have intensified action and also found that in some cases, it is their own men who at the culprits.

“In a few cases, we have identified some suspects and they are policemen. In one such case at Ghatkopar, we arekeeping a close watch on a constable, who is on sick leave. In another case registered with the Tilak Nagar police, we are probing into the involvement of a suspended constable,” said Quaiser Khalid, additional commissioner of police, East Region.

The police have also identified areas — mostly isolated stretches — where such incidents take place and have posted officers in plainclothes there.

Khalid added that increased awareness among the public will help prevent such crimes.

In a recent case, two men on a motorcycle approached an 80-year-old woman near Sainik Garden in Chembur.

The duo told her that some men had attacked a woman and robbed her valuables a short distance away and advised her to remove her ornaments, place them in her handkerchief and go home. While “helping her”, they stole the jewellery worth Rs66,000 and snuck in pieces of paper.

The Tilak Nagar police on Thursday arrested a priest of a Chembur temple for allegedly molesting a married woman devotee by assuring that she will bear a child soon.

“Chandrashekhar Kadam alias Baba, 54, a priest at Dattatray temple, was booked under sections 354 (molestation) and 508 (acts caused by inducing a person to believe that he will become an object of divine displeasure) of the Indian Penal Code,” said police inspector Siddharth Kasabe of Tilak Nagar police station. He added that Kadam was released on bail of Rs5,000 by the holiday court on Saturday.

Three friends of the Vada Pav seller from Chembur who was allegedly beaten to death by cops are too scared to testify against the police; victim’s family wants them to lodge a complaint

Two days after Sachin Khopkar, a Vada Pav seller from Chembur, was allegedly beaten to death by police constables, his friends who witnessed the incident find themselves in a dilemma. Although they are angry at the police brutality, they are afraid of police retribution. Meanwhile, Khopkar’s family is livid that the boys didn’t inform them of his death till the next morning, and expect them to lodge a police complaint to bring the culprits to book.

Sayyed Sadam (25), Avinash Waghsawre (21) and Swapnil Peter (22) were standing with Khopkar under their MHADA colony building at RCF at 12.30 am on Friday, when two beat constables on the night round approached them, asking them to clear the area. They allegedly began slapping the boys. The three left immediately. Khopkar, who stayed back, was beaten unconscious. Sadam, who hid close by, saw a police van take away Khopkar’s lifeless body at 1.30 am.

Indian women generally do not speak out about differences with their husbands in public, the Bombay high court said while referring to difficulties in getting evidence to prove ill-treatment. The court’s remarks came during the hearing of an appeal filed by Chembur resident Mohan Ranganathan, sentenced to life imprisonment for throttling his wife to death five years ago.

A division bench of Justice A M Khanwilkar and Justice P D Kode said that a probable motive was proved-that Mohan and his wife Geeta had less than cordial relations.

The police on Friday arrested a 45-year-old man who allegedly tried to set a woman ablaze in Chembur. The incident occurred when the victim, Latadevi Jagtap (32) asked the accused, Purushottam Kolambkar, to return the money he had taken from her after making a false promise of getting her a job.

Jagtap told the police that she met Kolambkar in 2006, when she was searching for a job. “Kolambkar told the victim that he had connections and could get her a job if she paid him,” said an officer of the Chembur police station.
