Tree lovers – Lahar Mehta and Satwiki Nair are spreading their love for the greens by conducting tree walks on Sunday in different nook and crannies of the city
The average Mumbaikar will attribute his lack of knowledge of local flora and fauna to the fact that there is indeed no green patch of land within the city limits, barring the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) and the Maharashtra Nature Park (MNP). Again, the trip to the first park would be far for some, while the latter’s locus in Dharavi would put off many people. However, challenging the popular notion of no trees is being challenged by two young women, who have dedicated their Sundays – rain or shine – to the understanding of leaves, flowers, roots and nature at large.
Lahar Mehta and Satwiki Nair – both 29 – have been walking through city lanes spotting trees and now have embarked upon a journey to get more people to understand trees better and relate to trees. A journey that began in April this year with a handful of people is fast shaping up into a popular group called ‘Walk The Mumbai Trees’. With passing times the number of the participants is shooting up thanks to the word-of-mouth publicity. It was obvious that the crowd would have been an eclectic one, considering that the torchbearers of this walk come from diverse professional backgrounds – Mehta is an interior architect and Nair is an IT professional.

In a new service, Maharashtra’s Chief Minister promises you a token number and a 24 hour call back assurance if you lodge a complaint with the cops online in Mumbai

Sit back. Relax. Switch on the computer. Get online. Log into the state government’s website at www.maharashtra.gov.in. Type in your name, mobile number, email address and type of complaint. You will receive an SMS code to feed into the system which verifies your complaint. You then receive a tracking number. According to a Hindustan Times newspaper source, the police will then ackowledge your complaint within 24 hours, conduct initial investigations and then decide whether it merits an actual FIR report.
Maharashtra State Police gets the honor of being the first state in the country to handle citizen’s complains via a click of a button. And it sounds like, from the Indian Express quoting Home Minister R R Patil, that you will be charged for “the same”.

The city’s first twin tunnels, coming up as part of the four-lane Eastern Freeway project between Anik and Panjarpol, is nearing completion. The first 100 m of the 450-m tunnels, which are being dug through a hill in the BARC area, will be ready soon.
The estimated cost of the twin tunnels is Rs 61 crore. The Eastern Freeway project has a 12-km elevated stretch from P D’Mello Road to Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) Road. The freeway will then join the Eastern Express Highway via Anik-Panjarpol Link Road near Wadala.
“We have excavated 350 m of the left tunnel and 250 m in the right tunnel. We will concretise a cross section of 100 m in both tunnels,” said MMRDA spokesman Dilip Kawathkar.

With the 146-km Metro project cost escalating from Rs 19,525 crore to Rs 47,092 crore, the city’s planning body proposes to seek loans from international banks to finance the project. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is contemplating taking a loan of $20 billion (approximately Rs 20,000 crore) to build seven Metro lines.
“We are looking at international financial institutions to finance our Metro projects in the city. Officials from the World Bank and the Japanese Bank of International Cooperation have shown keen interest in participating in the Metro projects,” said Metropolitan Commissioner Ratnakar Gaikwad.
“We will need finance for many of our future Metro projects because some of these will be built underground, making the project costlier,” he added.

You will have to wait till at least mid-2011 before you can travel on Mumbai’s first monorail, which is the 19.54-km-long Jacob Circle-Wadala-Chembur route.
The line, which is also India’s first monorail system, was scheduled to be completed this December, but “the delay in getting the home ministry’s clearance for construction near the Arthur Road jail and delay in completing the Wadala depot work will set the project behind by six months,” a senior government official said, requesting anonymity.
The monorail is being built in two phases: The nine-km Wadala-Chembur line was supposed to be completed by December 2010, while the Chembur-Jacob Circle stretch was expected to be ready by May 2011.
The delays near Arthur Road jail and the Wadala depot mean both phases will be set back by six months each.

MMRDA to construct a tri level structure with the flyover at a height of 65 ft from ground level

As reported in India Infoline News Service on Jun 28, 2010
For the very first time in Mumbai the vehicles will ply on a bridge which will be at a height of 65 ft above the ground level on a tri level structure being constructed at the junction of Panjarpol, Chembur. The structure will be a part of the Eastern Freeway that starts from P D’Mello road in South Mumbai and ends at Ghatkopar on Eastern Express Highway.
The state-of-the-art structure being constructed by MMRDA will be a part of a trio of structures that will consist of the flyover being built at a height of 65 ft on the third level, a Mahim Kurla Mankurd Metro line at a height of 20 ft at the second level and level one will be the existing Ramkrishna Chemburkar road.
The Metro line will run parallel above the Ramkrishna Chemburkar road and the elevated road will cross the metro at the Panjarpol junction. The work of the engineering marvel has begun and is expected to be completed in a year’s time. The 65 ft height stretch will comprise of 2+2 lane carriage ways.
“Mumbai is a centre of economic enlargement and hubs of scientific innovations, therefore, for the sustenance of such a city; precedence is required to be given for solving its traffic problems. The traffic bearing capacity of roads within the city can be increased by constructing Tri- level flyovers for smooth traffic flow on busy road junctions”, said Mr. Ratnakar Gaikwad, Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA.
Construction of elevated structure at a height of 65 ft in itself is a mammoth effort which will undertake with the help of huge cranes, launching girders and other machineries.
Another important feature of this project is a twin tube tunnel being constructed in the BARC hill. This will be joined by the elevated road in the Panjarpol junction maintaining the same elevation of 65 ft.
The proposed trio will be a source of pride for Mumbai, which believes many more tourists will come to admire one of the engineering wonders of the 21st Century.

It is a small room hidden in a temple complex in the bustling Deonar Colony, Govandi.
Nonetheless, this space is set to become a ray of hope for the poor and senior citizens of the area after a physiotherapy centre was launched there under HelpAge India’s Urban Age Care Project.
“In our research into health care for seniors, we found that physiotherapy is one area in which the elderly find little help. The lack of affordable and easily accessible hospitals makes it even more difficult,” said Prakash Borgaonkar, joint director (RM), HelpAge India.
The centre, the fifth in the country and the first in Maharashtra, has been started in collaboration with the senior citizens association of Govandi.
