The city’s first twin tunnels, coming up as part of the four-lane Eastern Freeway project between Anik and Panjarpol, is nearing completion. The first 100 m of the 450-m tunnels, which are being dug through a hill in the BARC area, will be ready soon.
The estimated cost of the twin tunnels is Rs 61 crore. The Eastern Freeway project has a 12-km elevated stretch from P D’Mello Road to Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) Road. The freeway will then join the Eastern Express Highway via Anik-Panjarpol Link Road near Wadala.
“We have excavated 350 m of the left tunnel and 250 m in the right tunnel. We will concretise a cross section of 100 m in both tunnels,” said MMRDA spokesman Dilip Kawathkar.
