The area being a high security zone, most of these establishments are protected by high walls all around. Besides the refineries and the power station, a naval centre is also nearby which is also a sensitive establishment. Most of these areas are marked ‘Prohibited Areas’. An alert security person of the Mumbai Port Trust noticed some suspicious activities going on in the area and brought it to the notice of the local police.
Accordingly four men were nabbed while committing the theft.Shailesh Pasalwar, Police Inspector (Investigations) attached to the RCF Police station informed that four youths Nitin Tiwari, Sunil Yadav, Ramesh Thewar and Rizwan Ahmed Shaikh have been arrested for pilfering oil from the pipelines. The modus operandi was that the gang would puncture a hole in the pipeline and siphon off through a plastic pipe into a tanker parked close to a wall. The thick grass covering the pipes is a strong camouflage for such activities
